The Importance of Custody Structure

Custody is the unglamorous but foundational element of wealth management. Where your assets are held, in whose name, under what legal structure, and with what insurance and indemnification determines your protection in a scenario that most clients never anticipate — the failure, fraud, or insolvency of an institution or advisor.

Securities Custody

All securities held by St. Lawrence Gate clients are custodied with approved Canadian financial institutions that are members of CIPF, the Canadian Investor Protection Fund. This provides up to $1 million in protection per account category in the event of a CIPF member insolvency. For clients with portfolios exceeding CIPF coverage thresholds, we structure multi-custodian arrangements.

Physical Asset Custody

For clients who hold physical gold, silver, or other precious metals as a portfolio allocation, St. Lawrence Gate provides custody arrangements with Canadian-domiciled private vaults that are independently audited and insured at full replacement value. Unlike allocated storage through a bank, the metals are individually identified to your account and are not a liability of any financial institution.

Digital Asset Custody

For clients with meaningful digital asset allocations, St. Lawrence Gate works with qualified Canadian custody providers that hold digital assets in cold storage, maintain insurance coverage, and are subject to regulatory oversight under applicable Canadian securities legislation.
